Euro 2024 Drama Unfolds: Portugal’s Penalty Thriller and Diogo Costa’s Heroics

I have not been actively updating my blog anymore, but this feat truly deserves a post. I have been following Euro 2024 closely, with Germany being the team I’m rooting for. While they are through to the quarterfinals, I have some doubts on whether they can get past Spain after seeing the latter’s great performance in their last match against Georgia to book their slot in the last 8. Except for Italy, who are already out, the rest of the top nations are still in contention, but they all had to go through a very fine line just to make it.

For England, they had to wait for injury time to level it 1-1 against Slovakia with Bellingham’s spectacular bicycle kick, followed by Kane’s header in extra time to keep them in the tournament. France had to be content with an own goal by Belgium to win 1-0. Then came today’s highlight, when the world was closely watching how a 39-year-old Ronaldo could carry Portugal to another Euro trophy. But his penalty in extra time was brilliantly saved by Oblak, with both sides yet to score a goal. Then Diogo Costa saved Šeško’s one-on-one breakaway attempt to keep the game level and send it to penalties.

This is where all the drama started. Diogo Costa denied Slovenia’s first penalty taker, and then Ronaldo redeemed himself by placing a powerful shot close to the bottom left corner, leaving Oblak no chance to save it. Diogo Costa then saved the second and third penalties by Slovenia, while Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva converted theirs. What a game for Diogo Costa, and what a beautiful game of football!
