Dad Dives into VR: From Birthday Surprise to Workday Inspiration

When my son’s birthday rolled around, a virtual reality headset topped his wish list. After some careful consideration (and spotting a tempting sale on Amazon Japan!), I decided to take the plunge and surprise him with this cutting-edge gadget. Initially, I had been eyeing the PSVR 2 for our PS5, but its steep price tag and my concerns about potential motion sickness held me back. However, at around S$300, the Meta Quest 2 seemed like a worthwhile investment to test the waters of VR.

Little did I know that this birthday gift would spark a flood of ideas for incorporating VR into the workplace, especially when combined with the power of Generative AI (GenAI). With Apple’s recent unveiling of their Vision Pro headset, my mind began racing with possibilities for leveraging VR technology in areas like training and troubleshooting. This birthday surprise presented the perfect opportunity to experience VR firsthand and assess its potential to revolutionize the way we work.

To my amazement, I discovered that I didn’t experience any motion sickness while immersed in the VR world. Interestingly, watching someone else navigate a VR game from an outside perspective was more likely to induce nausea than actually wearing the headset myself. Once I strapped on the Meta Quest 2 and stepped into the virtual realm, I was struck by how realistic and comfortable the experience felt.

What began as a birthday gift for my son has evolved into a fascinating exploration of VR’s potential, both for entertainment and its promising applications in the professional sphere. In upcoming posts, I’ll delve deeper into the exciting possibilities of combining VR with GenAI to revolutionize training, problem-solving, and beyond. Stay tuned for more insights on this cutting-edge technology!
