Today I’d like to focus on one of my primary sources for AI-related information – Dr. Alan D. Thompson’s Lifearchitect.ai website. I first stumbled upon his site while searching for an “LLM models comparison chart”, and was immediately drawn to his effective visualization of model sizes in terms of billions or trillions of parameters. To this day, I still use this chart as a handy reference when explaining the relative sizes of models like GPT 3.5 (20B), GPT 4 (1.76T), and Claude 3 Opus (2.0T), which I currently utilize.
Just yesterday, I had the opportunity to join Dr. Thompson’s live stream on YouTube for the first time. When I joined, there were fewer than a hundred viewers, and even a day later, the video has garnered less than 3,000 views. It’s unfortunate that such high-quality content from genuine experts in the field doesn’t receive the same level of attention as the more sensationalized videos from popular YouTubers.
During the live stream, I posed a question about whether my perception was accurate – that less than 1% of the population truly understands what AI is and isn’t, beyond what mainstream media portrays. Dr. Thompson’s response was even more surprising. Not only did he agree with it, but also stated that “less than a dozen people in the world really know how to train an LLM to SOA (state-of-the-art) standard from scratch”.
