Ah, the ’80s! A decade that marked the dawn of handheld gaming devices and home consoles. As a kid growing up during this era, I was lucky enough to experience the magic firsthand. It all started with the Game & Watch craze that swept through my elementary school like wildfire.
Thanks to my well-to-do classmates, I got to try out a smorgasbord of Game & Watch titles. There was Fire, where you played the heroes saving survivors from a burning building by catching them with a stretcher. Talk about a high-stakes game of catch! Then there was Parachute, which had you catching falling men before they took an unplanned dip in the water. Octopus was another favorite, challenging you to snatch treasures while avoiding the clutches of a cephalopod.
But the real stars of the show were Popeye, where you collected items thrown by Olive Oyl (talk about a strong arm!), and Mickey Mouse, which turned you into a virtual egg-catching machine as hens laid them faster than you could say “omelette.” And let’s not forget my personal Game & Watch, Fire Attack, where you fended off torch-throwing attackers. I have fond memories of playing this one during a hospital stay for a high fever—it sure beat staring at the ceiling!
Little did I know that these early gaming experiences were just the beginning of my lifelong love affair with electronics and computing. Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far gaming and computing have come since those early days. The graphics may have been simplistic and the sounds may have been a bit bleepy, but the joy and excitement they brought were extraordinary!
